01. Intro

To drive smart-home innovation, SkyCentrics teamed up with Cactus to keep their existing platform running smoothly while building a future-ready system.

02. Challenge

As a leading IoT company in the smart building sector, SkyCentrics needed to maintain an aging platform without service disruption.

03. Solution

Cactus applied its agile, dual-track development approach to stabilize the legacy system while delivering new, scalable smart-home features.

04. Results

SkyCentrics now benefits from a robust legacy platform and real-time, user-ready features that accelerate the rollout of their next-generation system.

01. INTRO

Leading the Smart Home Movement with Real-Time IoT Innovation

SkyCentrics, headquartered in California, is leading the way in IoT for smart buildings and distributed energy management. As a pioneer in CTA-2045 EcoPort, OpenADR, and Volttron technologies, SkyCentrics is transforming how devices like water heaters and pool pumps are being connected and controlled.  To support this innovation, SkyCentrics is partnering with Cactus for ongoing software development. They are relying on Cactus not only to keep their legacy systems running smoothly during the transition to their next-generation platform but implementing new features to test case with users if they are valuable for the new version.

02. CHALLENGE

Balancing Legacy Support with Next-Generation Platform Demands

One of the biggest challenges a company with a legacy application faces when deciding to update their technology is: How to balance the efforts between building the new platform vs supporting and bringing new meaningful features to the legacy version in the meantime, so that users don’t spend a long period without any improvements.

For that transition to be successful, the company needs to count on the expertise and strong development skills that will allow for the legacy application to still be well-served with great experience, even with partially allocated resources to it.

SkyCentrics is currently navigating this dual-track development journey:

  1. They are building their new smart-home platform from the ground up.
  2. At the same time, they are continuing to support and update with new features, a legacy portal that has been in use for over a decade by active customers.

This creates a complex environment, where deep knowledge of the application and high levels of expertise are required to be able to develop new features, while providing continuous updates, bug fixes, and performance improvements. SkyCentrics needs a development partner who can handle both tracks without missing a beat.

03. SOLUTION

Delivering Scalable, Cross-Platform Solutions for Smart Device Management

To meet the evolving technical demands of the project, Cactus enrolled several expert profiles based on SkyCentrics’ requirements: a Back-end PHP Developer, who helped make the application more compact and efficient; a Front-end Developer in Angular, focused on enhancing the user experience; a QA Developer, who ensured the final product met quality standards; and a Project Manager, who acted as the coordination hub to ensure delivery on time and in scope.

With this multidisciplinary team in place, Cactus is actively maintaining the legacy system across iOS, Android, tablet, and web interfaces. This includes:

  • Fixing bugs
  • Implementing small, customer-driven features
  • Enhancing the login experience with brand-new solutions
  • Ensuring admin tools continue to work reliably

Cactus is also delivering new functionality as SkyCentrics expands its smart-home capabilities. Current initiatives include:

  •  Rolling out a TOU Setup App to control water heaters (launched August 2022)
  • Continuing development on a Scheduling Dashboard for device management
  • Enhancing a Cloud Service for remote home automation
  • Implementing Smart Actions to automate the devices’ workflow with decision-trees
  •

By combining deep technical expertise with agile processes, Cactus is helping SkyCentrics push the boundaries of smart-home technology.

04. RESULT

Driving Continuous Growth and Seamless User Experiences

Through this ongoing collaboration, SkyCentrics is:

  • Keeping their legacy platform fully functional and stable
  • Rolling out new features without disrupting service
  • Expanding their smart-home ecosystem to include more devices and capabilities
  • Giving users real-time control over their homes anytime, from anywhere
